Shiva gaat op hadj - Eefje Blankevoort, Teheran 26 Januari, 2006
De jaarlijkse Hadj naar Mekka is voor gelovige moslims het belangrijkste evenement in hun leven. Zo'n 3 miljoen moslims van over de hele wereld nemen deel aan de rondgang om de Ka'abeh. Dit jaar vervult ook Shiva, een vijfenveertig jarige huisvrouw uit Teheran, haar belangrijkste religieuze plicht.
Democracy in the former Soviet Union
Spring 2007 Prospektor will travel through the former Soviet Union to produce an extensive reportage about the democratic situations of these countries.
Dream Land Kurdistan
In December 2006 De Groene Amsterdammer (a Dutch weekly magazine) and Knack (a Belgian magazine) published Prospektor-articles about the parts of Turkey, Iraq and Iran also known as Kurdistan. English translations are available hereunder.
Dream City
In the reportage 'Dream City' (which consists of text and photographs) Anoek Steketee (photographer) and Eefje Blankevoort, Arnold van Bruggen and Tomas Kaan interviewed Kurds, Arab Iraqi's & American soldiers within the grounds of the amusement park 'Dream City'. In June 2007 a Prospektor-documentary about Dream City will be released. This film will be directed by Tomas Kaan.

Blood Diamond
In opdracht van NiZA (Nederlands Instituut voor Zuidelijk Afrika) maakte Prospektor een slideshow van de fotoreportage Diamond Matters van fotograaf Kadir van Lohuizen. De film was te zien op een scherm van 114 m2 aan het Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam.

September 2007 Eefje Blankevoorts' book about Iran 'Stiekem kan hier alles - de twee gezichten van de islamitische republiek Iran' (In secret everything's possible here - the two-faced Islamic republic of Iran) has been published by Podium. The book sold out in almost two weeks. In October the second edition was announced.

Kaukasische geschiedenislessen
De premier van de de jure Abchazische regering in ballingschap, een Georgiër met woeste wenkbrauwen, vertelt ons dat er niet lang geleden een congres voor historici werd gehouden in Oslo. Een van zijn adviseurs was hier aanwezig. Wat hem opviel, was dat Europa's geschiedenis - net als die van de voormalige Sovjet-Unie - wemelde van de territoriale disputen. Met als grootste verschil alleen dat de Europese historici hun vakgebied niet politiseerden. Een rake observatie. Deze vervolgens geheel en al tegen de wind in slaand, begint de premier ellenlang uit te wijden over de Georgische geschiedenis en de superioriteit die hieraan ontleend kan worden.
Oud en Nieuw in Abchazië
Het is oudejaarsavond in Suchumi, Abchazië. In een voormalig sovjetvakantieparadijs is het hoofdkwartier van de United Nations Observers Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) gevestigd. De VN'ers houden toezicht op de broze vrede tussen Georgië en Abchazië, een conflict dat al sinds de oorlog in '92-'93 bevroren is. Dergelijke schemergebieden kunnen bestaan, vertelt een VN-diplomaat ons, simpelweg omdat de grote machthebbers niet weten wat ze ermee aanmoeten.
Homo Sovieticus
Op het VN-hoofdkwartier staat Larissa ons achter de toonbank op te wachten. De kleine, gezette dame bestiert de slaapvertrekken van het voormalige sovjetvakantieparadijs waar de VN-missie is gevestigd. Larissa is een Oekraïense die na haar studie Engels aan de universiteit van Moskou in Suchumi terecht kwam. Dat is alweer 25 jaar geleden. Elk jaar gaat ze terug naar haar geboortestad Lvov om familie te bezoeken, maar nog nooit - ook niet in de donkerste dagen van de oorlog - heeft ze overwogen te remigreren. 'Abchazië is zo mooi, met haar stranden, de vriendelijke mensen en het heerlijke klimaat.' De oorlog was natuurlijk vreselijk, geeft ze toe, maar met een gelatenheid die je in het westen zelden aantreft zegt ze: 'But what can you do?!'.
De grenzen van een bevroren conflict
Het is een heel gedoe om Abchazië binnen te komen. Je hebt toestemming nodig van de Georgische minister van Conflictoplossingen, er dient een uitgebreide brief geschreven te worden naar de vertegenwoordiger van Kofi Annan en dan moet er nog toestemming komen van de Abchazische overheid in Suchumi. De de facto-overheid wel te verstaan. De de jure-overheid zit te verkleumen in de bergen van de Kodori-vallei.
Bureaucratisch wc-papier
Vadim en Rafael staan voor hun oude Wolga op het exercitieterrein van het oude parlement en regeringsgebouw. Van dit indrukwekkende, hoog oprijzende gebouw zijn alle ramen weggevallen en zijn de brandsporen na 13 jaar nog altijd zichtbaar. De parlementszaal is totaal ingestort en op een of andere manier hebben zaden van bomen weer hun weg gevonden tussen het beton en verwrongen staal om zich in volle glorie tussen het puin te ontpoppen.

Joeri Boom (mei 1971) is redacteur van De Groene Amsterdammer en bereist conflictgebieden. Hij versloeg onder meer de strijd in Kosovo, Macedonië, Irak, Darfur, Libanon en Afghanistan. In december bezocht Joeri de Nederlandse troepen in Uruzgan. Twee weken verbleef hij op de bases in Tarin Kowt en Deh Rawood. Het is de zesde keer dat hij naar Afghanistan reist, en de eerste keer dat hij is ingebed bij Nederlandse eenheden. Stond hij onder curatele of kon hij onafhankelijk zijn werk doen? Kurdistan - the imagined country (article)
Prospektor visited Kurdish communities in Turkey, Iraq and Iran. Since the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, the dream of an independent homeland has grown among the Iraqi Kurds. This has fuelled the fear in Iran and Turkey of the Kurdish minority in Iraq.

Prospektor filmed 'Ondertussen in Europa' (meanwhile in Europe), a tvmagazine-style report on the impact of the EU on different lives throughout Europe.
Journeys through the Caucasus
Prospektor's Tomas Kaan & Arnold van Bruggen travelled through Abkhazia and Georgia to write about this frozen conflict. They were accompanied by the brilliant photographer Rob Hornstra.
The Dregs Of The Soviet Union
Abkhazia doesn't exist. Not a single government in the world recognises this breakaway republic of Georgia, a country smaller than the Netherlands with just 250,000 inhabitants. But this tiny region is more important than it first appears. This is where the Cold War still simmers and the fierce power struggle between Putin's reborn Russia and President Saakashvili's revolutionary Georgia is fought out. ‘We can't let Abkhazia go, just like you can't let go of your liver.'

Op een dag zoeft Eefje Blankevoort met woest wapperende hoofddoek achter een vriendin aan de berg af. Het is jaren geleden dat ze op ski's stond en ze kan haar vriendin nauwelijks bijhouden. Hijgend komt ze aan bij de stoeltjeslift. En dan schrijft ze: ‘Even is het net alsof we weer in Iran zijn; de rij voor de lift is gescheiden, mannen links, vrouwen rechts. Maar echt goed is er niet over nagedacht want op die manier komen mannen en vrouwen juist naast elkaar in het stoeltje te zitten. En zo gaan verliefde stelletjes in elkaar verstrengeld naar boven. Shirin gebaart een jonge snowboarder dat hij moet wachten en trekt me ruw naast zich het stoeltje in. Waarom gelden er hier andere regels? vraag ik Shirin als we met flinke vaart de lucht in gaan. "De ayatollahs kunnen niet skiën," antwoordt ze glimlachend.'
Dream Cities

Below us, the cheerful lights of the amusement park twinkle and the countless families with ice creams, popcorn and cans of soft drink look like teeming ants. Laughing children run from attraction to attraction: a water slide, trampolines and an amusement arcade. Is this Iraq? No, you're in Dream City, a city with the happiest people in Iraq. The population consists of Kurds, Arabs - Shiites and Sunnis - and American soldiers. For many inhabitants, this city is a dream that contrasts sharply with their daily reality. That reality is war.

The Sochi Project.org releases first book
By the end of 2009 The Sochi Project will release its first annual publication, entitled Sanatorium. The book will be printed in a circulation of 350 copies (all numbered) and will be only available to donors of The Sochi Project @ € 25,00 + p&p. Silver and Gold donors will receive a signed copy of Sanatorium for free.
Oorlogsdagboeken over de jodenvervolging
Samen met elf andere geschiedenisstudenten van de Universiteit van Amsterdam gingen Arnold en Eefje in 2001 op zoek naar reacties van de tijdgenoten van hun grootouders op de jodenvervolging. Honderden dagboeken zijn hiervoor uit de kelder van het Nederlands Instituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie opgediept.Wat wist de niet-joodse bevolking over het lot van de joden die, zoals dat in de volksmond heette, 'naar Polen gingen' en hoe keek zij daar tegenaan?

provisional and announces the recounting of certain ballot boxes. No, there is not going to be a new revolution (yet?), but there will be change. There are already things changing and everybody can see it happening. As one friend from Iran wrote on twitter yesterday before going to bed: Viva Freedom!

The Sochi Project in Rome & Rotterdam
2010 starts good for The Sochi Project by Arnold van Bruggen (Prospektor) & Rob Hornstra (Borotov). The Project will be on display in the Dutch Photography Museum in Rotterdam during the Quickscan #1 exhibition. And in Rome the Mandeep Gallery will show especially made posters by the Sochi Project in its gallery and throughout the city.
Two Prospektor-projects nominated for Dutch Doc Awards 2010
'Dream City', a Prospektor project with photographer Anoek Steketee and 'The Sochi Project' with Rob Hornstra are nopminated for the Dutch Doc Awards 2010. De winners will be announced June 2nd in Utrecht.
On the Other Side of the Mountains
In August 2010 we published a new publication by The Sochi Project, called: 'On the Other Side of the Mountains', about a 'utterly inconsequential village' in Karachay Cherkessia, Southern Russia. The publication is available on thesochiproject.org.
